Biostimulants: Radiesse® & Sculptra®

It is an injection procedure used for patients with volume loss, fine lines, and poor skin quality.

TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY

Biostimulant injectables, such as Radiesse® and Sculptra®, are advanced treatments designed to stimulate your body’s natural collagen production. Unlike traditional fillers that provide immediate volume, biostimulants work gradually to improve skin thickness, elasticity, and overall quality from within.

Radiesse® is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. Once injected, the gel provides immediate structure, while the CaHA particles stimulate long-term collagen production.

Sculptra® contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible synthetic material that activates deep collagen regeneration over time. Results are not immediate, but are progressive and long-lasting, making them ideal for patients seeking subtle and natural facial rejuvenation.

Both injectables are excellent options for treating facial volume loss, deep folds, hollow cheeks, and other areas, such as the jawline and temples.

PROCEDURE DETAILS

Treatments typically take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the area(s) treated.

For Sculptra®, a series of 2–3 sessions, spaced approximately 4–6 weeks apart, is often recommended. Radiesse® may require fewer sessions, depending on the treatment area and the desired result.

The injections are performed with fine needles or cannulas. A topical anesthetic may be applied beforehand. Some products contain lidocaine to minimize discomfort during the procedure.

Most patients experience minimal downtime. Mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites may occur and typically resolve within a few days. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous exercise and exposure to excessive heat for 24–48 hours after treatment.

  • Temporary redness, swelling, or bruising
  • Tenderness at the injection site
  • Small lumps or nodules (usually resolve on their own)
  • Rare risk of granuloma formation or uneven results
  • Vascular complications (infrequent, mitigated by experienced injection technique)
